Psychological Evaluation

Psychoeducational Evaluations

Psychoeducational evaluations are conducted for students

who are having academic difficulties in school and are

used to identify and diagnose learning disabilities. The

evaluation is beneficial in providing information about

strengths and weaknesses in an individual's learning style. This information is then used for making recommendations for teaching and learning strategies that will be effective for a certain student.

Testing includes an assessment of the following:

1. Cognitive ability (i.e., IQ test)

2. Academic skills (e.g., reading, math, written language)

3. Cognitive processing (e.g., language, visual processing, reasoning, memory,

motor or handwriting skills, speed of information processing, and attention)

4. Emotional and behavioral functioning.

Gifted/IQ Evaluations

Gifted evaluations are conducted to determine if a

child is advanced intellectually and would benefit

from receiving more intense/challenging education

in the school setting. This evaluation involves the

administration of a standardized test of intellectual

functioning, an IQ test, such as the Wechsler

Intelligence Test for Children-Fourth Edition (WISC-IV). In order to qualify for the Gifted Program, a child must score at or above the 98th percentile on an IQ test. This means that he or she scored better than 98 out of 100 children his or her age, which is equivalent to an IQ score of 130 or above. IQ tests can also provide information about an individual's learning style and strengths and weaknesses in the way that he or she processes information.

Emotional Evaluations

Emotional distress is often a part of life for many individuals. An emotional evaluation

can provide valuable information about an individual’s current emotional adjustment and

the underlying reasons for an individual's emotional distress. These evaluations can help

to provide recommendations for treatment of symptoms of many difficulties including,

but not limited to, Anxiety, Panic, Depression, and PTSD. Tests may include the

administration of standardized questionnaires, objective self-report measures, projective

measures, and personality tests.

ADHD/Behavioral Evaluations

ADHD/Behavioral evaluations are often used to

determine whether a child’s attention difficulties

and/or problem behaviors can be attributed to an

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or if they

are symptomatic of another problem, such

as oppositional behavior or depression. These

evaluations provide information and recommendations

for families on what strategies or treatment options will be beneficial

in helping to manage the symptoms of these types of problems. Tests may include

the administration of a standardized measure of cognitive ability, parent and teacher

questionnaires, objective self-report measures, tests of attention, and personality tests.
